Custom Printed T-Shirts

T-shirts are one of the most versatile products for custom printing.

Depending on the fabric and artwork, they can be decorated using methods including DTG, DTF, Supacolour and Digital Transfers, making them suitable for everything from company uniforms and promotional clothing to events, clubs and merchandise.

Custom Printed Polo Shirts

Although embroidery is extremely popular for polo shirts, printing can also be an excellent choice, particularly when the artwork contains fine detail, multiple colours or design elements that don't translate well into embroidery.

The appropriate printing method depends on the polo fabric and construction, so not every print process is suitable for every style.

Printed Workwear & Uniforms

Which Custom Printing Method Should I Choose?

You don't need to know whether you need DTG, DTF or Supacolour before choosing a garment.

Different printing methods have different strengths, and having several options available means we can match the decoration method to the product and artwork rather than trying to force every job through the same process.

Here are the major custom printing methods available at House of Uniforms.

Direct to Garment (DTG) Printing

Direct to Garment printing, usually shortened to DTG, prints artwork directly onto the garment using specialised garment inks.

It's suited to lightweight 100% cotton garments such as T-shirts, singlets and tote bags, and can reproduce detailed, full-colour artwork without the individual colour setup traditionally associated with screen printing.

Because the ink is applied directly to the garment rather than producing a separate transfer first, DTG can create a relatively integrated print feel, particularly on suitable fabrics.

DTG is commonly used for custom T-shirts and other appropriate cotton garments.

Direct to Film (DTF) Printing

Direct to Film printing, or DTF, involves printing the artwork onto a specialist film before transferring the design onto the garment using heat.

One of DTF's major strengths is its versatility. It can be used across a broad range of suitable cotton, polyester and blended fabrics, giving us options for garments that aren't ideal candidates for DTG.

DTF can reproduce full-colour artwork and fine detail and uses white ink where required for printing onto dark garments.

Because the design is transferred onto the garment rather than printed directly into the fabric, the finished print has more of a surface feel than DTG.

Supacolour Printing

Supacolour is a professional transfer decoration method capable of reproducing detailed, full-colour artwork across a wide variety of suitable garments.

It's particularly useful when you want the detail and colour possibilities of digital artwork combined with a transfer process that can be applied to many different garment types.

Supacolour can reproduce fine details and photographic-style artwork, with Pantone matching available where required. Metallic and other specialist options are also available for suitable jobs.

Digital Transfers

Digital Transfers provide another flexible option for applying custom logos and artwork to suitable garments and products.

Artwork is produced as a transfer and then applied to the product using heat and pressure. This makes digital transfers useful across products and materials where direct printing may not be the appropriate option.

The best method will depend on the product, artwork and intended use, so we'll recommend Digital Transfers where they make sense rather than treating them as interchangeable with every other transfer process.

DTG vs DTF vs Supacolour: What's the Difference?

They all produce printed branding, but they don't work in the same way.

DTG prints directly onto the garment and is suited to lightweight 100% cotton garments.

DTF prints onto film before being heat transferred and works across a wider variety of suitable fabric types.

Supacolour is a transfer system particularly useful for detailed, multi-colour artwork and larger quantity branded apparel orders.

Digital Transfers provide additional options for particular products, materials and artwork.

Rather than choosing a method based purely on its name, consider the garment, fabric, artwork, quantity and desired finish.

Custom Printing vs Embroidery

One of the most common questions is whether a logo should be printed or embroidered.

Neither method is inherently better.

Embroidery creates texture and dimension using thread and is particularly popular across polo shirts, business shirts, workwear, chef uniforms, jackets and caps.

Printing can be better for large artwork, fine detail, multiple colours, photographic designs and lightweight garments where embroidery could add unnecessary weight or distort the fabric.

Sometimes the same uniform range may even use both methods depending on the garment.
