2. Garment Preparation - Part 1 : There are several steps involved in garment preparation. Firstly the garment is placed inside a heat press to draw out any residual moisture. Natural fibres, which DTG is best suited for, tend to hold moisture even when they feel dry. This first step ensures all moisture is removed and the fabric is flat and free of wrinkles. Ensuring a dry and smooth surface for the print to be applied.
3. Garment Preparation - Part 2 : Next the garment is pre-treated with a spray inside a machine called "the cube". This treatment helps the ink bond with the fabric. It also helps improve colour vibrancy and helps prevent the ink from bleeding and cracking.
4. Printing Process: Once the garment is prepped, it's placed onto the DTG printer’s printing board. We use state of the art Mimaki DTG Printers. These printers use high-quality, water based inks to print the design directly onto the fabric. The nozzles shoot the ink out onto the garment, somewhat like a spray can. The result is a vibrant, high resolution image that feels at one with the garment.
5. Curing : After the design is printed, the garment has to be dried using heat to ensure the ink sets properly. This step locks in the colour and makes the print durable. We use a drawer dryer for this process. Just like the name suggests it's basically a big set of drawers, which gets very hot inside. The garment gets placed inside, the drawer gets to work and once it's "cooked" the door releases to reveal the completed product.

Limitations of DTG Printing

While DTG printing offers many advantages, it does have a few limitations:

1. Best on 100% Cotton: DTG works best on garments made from 100% cotton or high-cotton blends. While it’s possible to print on synthetic blend fabrics, the print results will not be as vibrant or durable. Over time, if the fabric contains polyester, the print will start to take on a distressed look. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing if that's what you're looking for.
2. Cost for Large Orders: For large bulk orders, DTG printing can be more expensive than other types of printing due to the slower production speed. For businesses or clubs looking to print hundreds or thousands of items DTF will be a more cost effective option.
3. Best on Light Colours: While DTG printing can be done on dark fabrics, it requires additional steps, such as applying a white base layer. Our production team will add this if required. This step does add to the time required to produce the garments and the look of the print on dark garments vrs light garments will look different due to the absorption of the ink into the fabric.

DTG Printing vs. Screen Printing
